I did some testing and it seems to be working for both lines of models now and the BDC has all the storage controllers supported by both versions of iaStor.sys and iaStor1.sys. I asusme you could add as many versions of the Intel drivers as necessary to support your environment using this method.
I hope this saves someone else some time as it cost me a couple of days. I tried updating winpe.wim to make the drivers appear with the source as Base in BDC and then add the second lot as source custom but only the custom drivers showed up after I imported them. It was at least interesting to learn that process which I am posting here for anyone who might need an alternate method to BDC of adding drivers to WinPE.
